A web site's presence, and therfore importance, on the internet can have a large impact on its postion in search engine listings. One way Google quantifies it's presence is to measure the number and quality of links to your web pages.

eg. Web site A and web site B are identical in every way. Web site A has 100 other web sites from around the internet showing a link back to web site A. Web site B has no links back to it anywhere on the internet. A search engine indexes both sites but gives more weighting to site A as it appears to be more important as 100 other sites deem it worthy of a link. The search engine therefore lists web site A higher than B in its search listings.
